NYC - Part III

NYC - Part III

This is the biggest of the Big Apple posts to close out our trip. I'm going to let the pictures do the talking here, so there'll be very few words. The pictures cover the last 2 1/2 days we spend in New York; venturing to Brooklyn, as well.

We woke up to our son coughing and hacking and feeling all-around like dirt. Probably the most unfortunate time to come down with something. He had a low-grade fever and I know it pained him to tell us that he couldn't leave the room.

Like all book lovers, we tried to ensure our travels involved at least one bookstore during the trip, but if I'm remembering correctly, we averaged more than one bookstore a day! Which is gnarly.

I will say that these two days wandering without our son led us to some places we wouldn't have otherwise gone. East/west streets with nothing but apartments, coffee shops surrounded by apartments, specialty shops, Chinatown, Little Italy... These are the types of adventures I love the most: no plans, going wherever, feeling no urgency to see or go somewhere... The best kind of traveling.

I swear, some people think we're probably the worst tourists. Go to a world-famous city - the city! - and don't take in the usual spots. But I'll always stand by that, for me, the way I take in a city and a place by going wherever whenever is the absolute best and only way to experience it.

Checking items off a must-do it list just doesn't do it for me. At that point, traveling becomes a to-do list, not a vacation.

I get this weird kind of anxiety, though. Like... would I have been able to take the pictures I did, and have the experiences I did, if I planned everything? So much of what we did and the pictures I took couldn't have been planned; couldn't have been anticipated.

So much of what happens is in the moment; the photographs aren't just incidental, they're accidental.

I'm able to take the pictures I take because I'm a victim of circumstance? Or do I create the circumstance of randomness to allow me to take such fleeting moment photographs?

A combination of the two?

Either way... I meet the randomness with excitement. I'm ready for it!
