"Hike?! For Your Birthday?"
"You long to go into nature because nature doesn't care about you." - Diana Helmuth
For my sister-in-law’s birthday, she had a grand idea to hike Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Falls in sunny Palm Springs. And by sunny, I mean: high-beams, hardly any shade, evil-kid-with-a-magnifying-glass kind of sun. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, but let be clear: I hate being in the sunshine. Even with sunblock, I manage to get sunburned. My sunburns tend to not be good (is there even a good sunburn?), and my body for some reason loves to turn into a furnace when I’m out in the sun. And it stays hots for hours and hours afterwards.

BUT!
I love love love love being in nature. So, it’s a give-and-take. I give myself over to the sun and it takes my will to live.

The thought of hiking in Palm Springs seemed odd to me. Like, what else is there in the hills besides dirt and rock? But then I took a step back and asked myself, “Isn’t that kind of what Joshua Tree is and yet you love it so much?”

I was pleasantly surprised by the water features on the trail. A small creek we had to cross a few times provided some entertainment as we tried balancing on fallen trees, not to letting our shoes get too soaked, and keeping mossy rocks from making us slip into the water.

The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (trail):

I’ll skip the part about how a member of our party had an insanely difficult time scaling a four-foot rock to make it to the little waterfall/pool feature. Needless to say, I’m willing to bet more than one person tinkled in their pants from the laughter.

And don’t you just love how a hike can take you two or more hours to reach the destination and then just forty-five minutes to finish the return journey?

If you made it this far in the post, thank you!
